Two crashes on A289 causing delays in the Medway Tunnel between Gillingham and Strood

Two accidents are causing delays on a busy route where roadworks are taking place.

The incidents have happened at the exit of the westbound Medway Tunnel between Gillingham and Strood and the approach to the tunnel on the Gillingham side.

The traffic report Inrix says the tunnel has been partially blocked while vehicles are recovered and it is causing heavy traffic on the A289 from Maritime Way to Anthony's Way on the Medway City Estate.

Ongoing roadworks have already been causing delays for motorists, with the westbound tunnel down to one lane.

An update from Medway Council said: "Motorists are advised to expect delays near the Medway Tunnel westbound (heading towards #Strood) following reports of two crashes - one at the westbound entrance and another at the westbound exit. Use alternative routes if possible."

Witnesses said the aftermath of one of the incidents was being filmed by a TV documentary crew.

A spokesman for Kent Police said they were called to a collision involving three cars in Medway Tunnel at 1.43pm. No injuries were reported.

They were called again at 3.33pm to "a report of a woman needing medical assistance while inside a vehicle in Medway Tunnel".

The force was unable to provide further details.
