Coronavirus Kent: Borstal dad hoping to bring some cheer by dressing as Star Wars Stormtrooper

The force is certainly strong in this dad-of-two, who has been walking through a Kent village dressed as a Stormtrooper in a bid to lift people’s spirits during the lockdown.

Although only usually seen in a galaxy far, far away, Steven Waterman-Gay has today brought the iconic Star Wars character to Borstal, near Rochester.

The 47-year-old used his day’s allotted exercise this morning to march through the streets in full sci-fi soldier garb.

Speaking before he ventured outside, he said he was hoping to receive cheers from appreciative locals.

“Hopefully there’ll be a few cheers and claps – but I have no idea what people’s reactions will be,” he added.

“It’s just to bring some cheer to people around in lockdown.

“A lot of people have been stuck indoors for a few weeks now and it’s just something a bit different for them to look at when they glance out the window.”

Steven, who lives in Cordelia Crescent, insisted that he would adhere to social distancing measures while out on the walk.

A keen member of Star Wars cosplay group Imperial Outlanders, he explained that he came up with the idea after seeing others doing the same elsewhere in the country.

“I know a lot of kids like Star Wars and Stormtroopers,” he continued.

“If this one’s successful then I’ll do it again and go for more walks in the costume.”
