Defender set to sign for Gills

GILLINGHAM are hoping to clinch the signing of trialist Leon Johnson this week.

The 21-year-old former Southend defender is continuing to have talks with chairman Paul Scally after impressing in pre-season friendlies.

Meanwhile, Gillingham have denied national newspaper reports that the players were ready to take strike action following a dispute over bonuses and possible wage cuts.

Mr Scally met players' representatives on Thursday and said on BBC Radio Kent that night he was confident of resolving the issue.
