The air ambulance was also scrambled but both drivers were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by road.

One man, in his 40s, had leg pain and potential spinal injuries. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Kelly Longman was first on the scene with her husband.

She said: "My hubby asked the guys if they were OK and they said yes, but the driver in the other car may not have been breathing. My hubby went straight over to the driver's mangled door, which would not open.

"So he opened the back door to check he was breathing and he was."

The 42-year-old man from Chatham who was arrested was later released on bail until February 14.
