Officers saw the black BMW at about 11am in Whitewall Road on the Medway City Estate in Rochester.

When they flagged for the driver to pull over, two planks of wood fell into the road.

The car contained several pieces of board ranging from 3ft to 5ft in length.

A man in his 30s, from Chatham, who was driving the car, was issued with a Traffic Offence Report for "using a vehicle on a road which could have caused injury due to the security of the load", a police spokesman said.

The vehicle was also impounded after further checks by police found it was untaxed.

PS Grant Steele of Kent Police’s Roads Safety Unit said: "This was an unacceptable way to carry the materials and posed a real danger to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists which was evidenced when two of the items fell out of the car and into the road.

"Motorists should ensure their vehicle is an adequate size to carry the materials they intend to and that loads are secured inside the vehicle adequately."

The driver's sanction will now be decided after the report is sent to senior officers.

This could include a court summons, fixed penalty notice or no further action.
