Flats plan for former Medway Fire Station site in Gillingham look to be approved

Plans for flats and a food shop on the site of a former fire station look set to be approved.

The redevelopment of the former Medway Fire Station on the corner of Watling Street and Star Mill Lane in Gillingham is due to be discussed next week.

The plans put forward by Hartley-based Kent Kraft Development include the shop with four apartments, each with two bedrooms, above it.

There would also be five, three-bedroom houses behind it.

The old fire station closed in 2017 to make way for a new, £4.8 million facility.

An ambulance station next to the site will eventually be replaced by a new one in Gillingham Business Park, which will also feature a 999 and NHS 111 call centre.

The shop would be served by 15 parking spaces for customers, with 18 spaces for residents.

According to a report presented to councillors, seven letters of objection were received raising concerns about insufficient parking and the impact the development would have on pre-existing residents' ability to park.

There were also concerns about increased traffic, highway safety, and anti-social behaviour stemming from the operation of the shop.

The plans are due to be discussed by Medway Council's planning committee on Wednesday, February 8 and officers have recommended them for approval.
