Firefighters wearing dry suits and life jackets were sent out to reach them, aided by extension ladders and rescue lines.

They secured a line to the woman and then used a hose reel with a fog spike attachment to release the pressure of the mud around the man legs.

He was then able to climb to safety, while crews released the woman and carried her to dry land.

Crews performed first aid and gave oxygen to the woman, who was then passed to the care of SECAmb and taken to hospital.

They left the scene at 1.15am.
