More than 30 firefighters tackled a fire inside a rice factory overnight

Six crews from across Medway and other parts of the county were called out to the Veetee Rice factory in Neptune Close, on Medway City Estate, Strood, shortly after midnight after a fire broke out in machinery.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus to enter the building and bring the flames under control.

No one was injured during the incident. Firefighters were able to get the flames under control by about 1.20am and the flames did not damage the building.

At that point the incident was also scaled down and just four crews were left at the site to monitor the situation.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said that at its height around 35 firefighters tackled the blaze but the cause of it is not yet known.
