Firm speaks out over blaze that destroyed Chatham Docks warehouse

A recycling firm says the cause of a blaze that destroyed its warehouse in Chatham Docks remains a mystery.

Almost 50 firefighters were sent the scene after fire took hold of the Chatham Freight warehouse in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Crews had the incident under control by Saturday afternoon but the building was largely destroyed.

On Monday company secretary Tatiana Dogaru said the firm was still picking up the pieces and assessing the long-term impact of the blaze.

"At the moment everything is being investigated," she said. "We're waiting to understand how this happened.

"We didn't have anything in there that could start the fire. Everything was switched off and we checked at midnight - everything was okay.

"There wasn't any sign of any potential fire. We're going to wait for the insurance to assess the damage.

"It's destroyed the building - everything expect some corners at the front. The rest of if is burnt."

She said around 10 people worked at the building, which contained machinery and some waste, which had been due to be cleared.

"At the moment I can't really say any more," she said. "We're trying to recover as much as we can.

"Fortunately everything is OK and no one was injured.

"The firefighters couldn't understand how it happened.

"We are trying to recover any information to see if there was anyone else involved - a third party."

Kent Fire and Rescue Service the cause of the fire has not yet been established.
