It has warned flooding is possible today along the River Medway, and urged those living in the area to "be prepared".

One alert covers the lower river which includes Yalding, Allington, Maidstone, Tovil, East Farleigh, Wateringbury and Teston.

The other is in place along the upper river from Forest Row to Penshurst, including Ashurst, near Tunbridge Wells.

It comes after heavy rainfall yesterday, which is expected to bring minor flooding to low lying land for most of today.

The Environment Agency expects the rise to affect the riverside footpaths in the Maidstone, East Farleigh and Teston area.

River levels are expected to peak in Maidstone later this afternoon but will remain high until Wednesday morning, it warns.

Homes are not predicted to be at risk of internal flooding.

The government agency says it is continuing to monitor the situation and its staff are checking sluices and structures between Yalding and Allington to ensure the river can flow freely.
