A Ford Fiesta burst into flames on the M2 during the early morning rush hour traffic this morning.

Firefighters were called out to the London-bound carriageway between the Sittingbourne and Gillingham turn-offs, at about 6am where they found the engine compartment of the vehicle well alight.

The driver, a man who was travelling from Canterbury to London, had managed to pull over to the hard shoulder and get himself and his valuables out of his vehicle before the fire reached the interior.

A crew from Medway and Sittingbourne were called out to the scene and said they managed to put out the flames before the whole car was destroyed.

A spokesman added: “There was quite a build-up of traffic, as commuters made their way to London, but we managed to put out the flames before they spread to the rest of the car."
