Medway Macmillan Cancer Support Committee celebrate £1m

A group of volunteers have raised £1 million to help people with cancer.

The Medway Macmillan Cancer Support Committee, which has been running since 1960, has organised countless coffee mornings, fashion shows, sponsored swims, quiz nights and collections.

To celebrate the milestone the group were joined by the deputy mayor and mayoress of Medway, Cllr Steve Iles and his wife Josie, at their annual meeting at The Oasthouse Theatre, Rainham.

Members raised a glass to everyone who helped them reach the £1 million mark and cut a special cake.

Each year the team hosts a flagship fundraiser, part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, at Berengrave Cricket Club in Rainham.

Treasurer Maggie Meinertzhagen said: “Putting the fun into fundraising produces results and that is what we try to do.”

Emma Heley, Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Kent, said: “We are so grateful to the volunteers of our Medway Committee. Raising £1 million pounds is a fantastic achievement and this money has made an incredible difference to the lives of so many people affected by cancer.”
