Dr Iftikhar Ali, 75, has denied four allegations of rape, attempted rape and indecent assault.

In 2019 he was convicted of sexually assaulting another patient, the jury heard.

Prosecutor Ben Irwin told Maidstone Crown Court that in the 1990s Ali was the only GP at the practice in New Road, Chatham.

The woman was in her late teens at the time.

Mr Irwin told the court how in 1998 the alleged victim became pregnant and arranged to see the defendant with a view to having a termination.

“The explanation he gave to police was plainly a lie because he now says he did have sexual intercourse with her”

He said: “The prosecution case is when she went to see her GP, he took full advantage of his position of trust and the power he held over her by raping her on several occasions.”

Mr Irwin said over the years the woman confided in friends and professionals but didn’t tell the police.

Eventually, when the police did get involved, the GP was questioned and denied ever engaging in sexual activity with the woman.

Mr Irwin added: “The explanation he gave to police was plainly a lie because he now says he did have sexual intercourse with her on at least two occasions in his surgery.

“But he says what happened was consensual. The prosecution say that was another lie which was advanced by the defendant in an effort to get himself out of the position he now finds himself in.”

The jury heard how the teenager became pregnant following sexual abuse and was “terrified” and “vulnerable”.

Ali told her he would attempt to carry out the termination himself and asked her to attend the surgery after hours.

She returned, went upstairs and was told to undress and get on the table where the doctor attempted to perform the termination. He then attempted to rape her.

The prosecutor alleged Ali then offered to arrange the termination at the now defunct All Saints Hospital and then said he would destroy the medical records.

She says he raped her on other occasions.

The jury heard how in 2019, Ali, of The Downs, Chatham, was convicted of unrelated sexual assault when he stroked a woman’s thigh, sniffed her hair and repeatedly tried to kiss her on the lips as they discussed her personal life.

The trial continues.
