Strood High Street closed to traffic overnight

A high street will be closed to traffic this weekend due to ongoing improvement works.

Strood High Street will shut overnight between Rochester Bridge and just before Strood Retail Park.

The 43m section of road is being resurfaced as part of the Strood Town Centre Project.

Traffic will not be able to drive through the area from 8pm to 5.30am tonight, and on Saturday and Sunday.

This means there will be no access to Rochester Bridge for drivers coming from Strood High Street or Station Road.

Drivers from Rochester will not be able to access Strood via Rochester Bridge.

Traffic heading towards Rochester on Strood High Street will still be able to access Commercial Road for the retail park and the A2.

A diversion sign in Strood suggested traffic would be diverted through the Medway Tunnel.

The roadworks are part of the ongoing Strood Town Centre Project which aims to improve journey time through the town.

In May, the High Street shut to traffic for four weekends so builders could replace paving blocks with asphalt.

Initially the closures caused chaos and drivers faced two-hour queues to make the half-mile journey from Commercial Road, Rochester to Strood.

The project also orchestrated the resurfacing of Commercial Road car park with an added pedestrian route through the car park, new seating and greenery.
