Homes were evacuated after a bomb disposal unit was called to a "suspicious object" found in a house.
Police were called at about 4pm to reports of the discovery at a property in Severn Road, Chatham.
Police and fire crews were sent and to ensure safety, a neighbouring home was also evacuated and a cordon was put in place.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service was also called to assist police.
Experts from the Ministry of Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended and the item was deemed safe.
Residents were allowed to return to their homes at 6.20pm.
A police spokesman said they could not provide more details about the object that led to the drama.
