Cannabis plants found as firefighters battle blaze in Clarence Road, Chatham

Police are investigating after cannabis plants were found in a burning house in Chatham.

Flames had already engulfed half of the three storey home when firefighters arrived in Clarence Road, shortly after being called at about 11pm yesterday.

Neighbours have since described how the building "glowed red" as crews battled the blaze.

Police were also called to the fire and say they are now carrying out enquiries following the discovery of a number of cannabis plants.

The ground floor was destroyed in the blaze but nobody was injured.

Kent Fire and Rescue officers are also investigating the cause of the blaze.

A KFRS spokesman said: "When firefighters arrived it was well alight. Everyone was accounted for."

Two crews from Medway and one from Strood attended and brought the blaze under control in around an hour.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "My dad looked out of the window at the back of the house and saw a fire engine parked across the road at about 11.30pm.

"The back of the house was red - it had a red glow to it."

She also said she thought the house had been empty for around a month.
