Teenager arrested after car smashed into roundabout on Rochester Esplanade and barrel rolled after being chased by police

A teenager has been arrested after a car smashed into a roundabout and barrel rolled during a police chase.

Just before 2am today the black car crashed into the roundabout on Rochester Esplanade, and went straight through the signs.

Mark Hamilton heard the crash and said: "I'm normally a heavy sleeper, but this woke me up because it was such a massive bang.

"The police were there right away so I can only assume that the black car was trying to outrun them when it lost control, hit the roundabout and careered into the grass bank."

A 19-year-old man from Snodland was arrested on suspicion of driving offences and has been bailed until Wednesday November 18.

It is believed there were two people in the car, and one allegedly tried to escape up the bank but was detained.

South East Coast Ambulance were also called but there were no reports of any serious injuries.

Firefighters attended as well, as the car's airbag had gone off and the car was smoking. But the crew did not need to take any action.

The vehicle was recovered quickly, and a police van remained at the scene this morning.
