Knitter Joan is a smoothie operator creating wooly hats for The Big Knit to help Age UK

A great-grandmother from Chatham has knitted all sorts of items during her life but making little hats for smoothie bottles may be one of the strangest.

Joan Cook, 92, has been knitting since she was 14 and it was after her daughter read about the The Big Knit campaign in the Medway Messenger, she decided to make the little hats.

They will be sold on Innocent smoothie bottles in stores from February; for each hatted bottle, the company will donate 25p to help Age UK’s winter projects.

Mrs Cook said: “I’ve been knitting all my life – since I was at school.

“My daughter saw the campaign in the paper and said would I be interested. I said I would, to help out the elderly.

“She bought the pattern round with one of the bottles.

“I’ve made half a dozen of the strawberry ones, and half a dozen of the pineapple ones.

“It took me about three days, for a few hours each day, to make them.”

Mrs Cook is currently knitting a cardigan for herself but she has also knitted a variety of characters for her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, including Popeye, Father Christmas and a dolly.

She said she didn’t know exactly how many great-grandchildren she had, but at the last count it came to 13.

Karen Treacy, Age UK Medway campaign’s manager, said: “Joan is an amazing lady, it was a pleasure to meet her. Her hats were beautiful, the best we received. We hope Joan can contribute next year as well. A big thank you from Age UK Medway.”

John Norley, chief officer at Age UK Medway, said: “The colder months of the year can be really tough for many older people who can face difficulties protecting themselves from the harsh winter weather, getting out and about and staying connected.

“That’s why it’s so important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter services.”
