Lower Rainham Road closed and traffic chaos on A2 in Medway

Drivers were stuck in lengthy queues on the A2 after a crash and emergency roadworks caused travel chaos.

People travelling between Medway and Sittingbourne faced gridlock following an accident on Keycol Hill in Newington.

The road is already under added pressure as people are increasingly using it to get to Sittingbourne now the slip road from the M2 at Stockbury onto the A249 has closed for long-term roadworks.

KentOnline reporter John Nurden reported being stuck for an hour between Medway and Sittingbourne this evening.

Congestion on Keycol Hill did not clear until just before 9pm.

The problems were worsened by a burst water main along Lower Rainham Road, which is shut in both directions from Riverside Country Park to Eastcourt Lane to allow for emergency repairs.

There were also long delays and queueing traffic on the A2 High Street at Mierscourt Road, which stretched back to the Premier Inn, as well as further delays on Ito Way.

Traffic had returned to normal on the High Street at Mierscourt Road by 8pm.

However, the emergency road closure of Lower Rainham Road remains in place.
