Man arrested in Sittingbourne rushed to hospital in critical condition after falling ill at Medway Police Station

A man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after becoming unwell in police custody.

Officers were called to a disturbance at around 1pm, in Central Avenue, Sittingbourne, on Friday, where he was seen by the ambulance service before being arrested and taken to Medway Police Station.

He was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and has since been released under investigation.

Inspector Julia Pexton, from the police's professional standards department, said: "The next morning he became unwell and was taken to hospital by ambulance where he remains in a critical condition."

A mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been made.
