New Year's Eve reveller, 35, gets left thigh impaled on iron spike at Dillywood Fields, near Wainscott

A New Year’s Eve reveller trying to climb into a gated community during the early hours of this morning was injured when his leg became impaled on a iron railing spike.

The 35-year-old who has not been named, was apparently trying to climb into the Dillywood Fields housing development near Wainscott.

The incident happened shortly before 4am this morning when he somehow slipped and impaled his left thigh.

The emergency services, including, police, paramedics and firefighters from Strood fire station were called out to the exclusive estate, just off the B2000 Lower Rochester Road, to help free him.

Firefighters used ladders and other props, including crew members, to allow the man to support himself while others used a special saw to cut through the iron railing to enable him to be freed.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “He was in a lot of pain and the railing spike had gone through his left thigh.

“He was conscious throughout and we cut the spike with a special bladed saw and about three or four inches was left in his leg.

“It took about 45 minutes to free him and then we removed the ladders and helped him into the ambulance and he was taken to Accident and Emergency at Medway Maritime Hospital.

"He had been in a lot of pain, we tried our best to take care and not make it worse when we were sawing the railing, he handled it well.”

It is understood the man was trying to get inside the gated development to reach a family member’s home when the accident happened.
