Emergency services rescue man from the River Medway near Rochester bridge

A man was rescued from the River Medway this morning after he became stuck in mud.

Emergency services, including the Medway coastguard, were called to the Strood side of Rochester bridge, near the old civic centre at 6am.

The man, thought to be around 25, had become stuck in the mud and was extremely hypothermic.

Richard Rogers, Medway coastguard said: “He was stuck in the mud by the civic centre and taken to hospital.”

The man was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

The extent of his injuries are unknown.

A police spokesman said: “Kent Police was called at 5.33am on Sunday, January 3, following reports of a man in the River Medway near to the Rochester Bridge.

“KFRS and the Coastguard also attended and the man was pulled from the river and taken to a local hospital for treatment.”
