Gunman released without charge after entering McDonald's, Strood

Two men who were arrested after apparently walking into a MCDonald's with a gun have been released without charge.

The incident resulted in armed police rushing to the fast food restaurant in Strood following reports of a gunman inside.

Officers were called to the restaurant in Commercial Road, Strood, just before 3.30am, on Wednesday.

Two men were arrested five hours later and an airgun was seized.

A 65-year-old man from Rochester was held on suspicion of possessing a weapon and being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

A 36-year-old man from the Chatham area was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and obstructing an officer.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called to Commercial Road at 3.20am after it was reported that a weapon has been seen.

Armed officers attended and enquiries led to the arrest of two men at around 8.30am."

No threats were made to staff.

A McDonald's spokesman said: "We can confirm that an incident took place and the police are investigating."

The restaurant stayed open as usual.

Today, Jordan Bluer spokesman for police said: "Officers attended and carried out an extensive search, however the suspect had left the area.

"He was located and arrested alongside a second man when they returned to the restaurant at 8.32am.

"The weapon was subsequently found to be a low-powered air gun and was handed to officers.

Following inquires, no evidence was found to suggest the air weapon had been used to threaten staff or members of the public or that any other offences had taken place.

"Both men, were released without charge."
