Kicking off the action is 1980s' icons The Human League performing hits such as Don't You Want Me, which was the 1981 Christmas number one, Fascination and Mirror Man.

The following night James Blunt, who shot to fame 15 years ago with the number 1 hit You're Beautiful, will take to the stage.

Then on Friday night it's the turn of New Yorkers Cameo, who enjoyed commercial success throughout the '80s.

Closing out the festival will be Ska icons The Special who gained worldwide exposure owing to their haunting anthem Ghost Town.

And now additional acts have been named by the festival promoters, AGMP, who will be joining the star-studded line-up.

They include former X Factor soul singer Rebecca Ferguson, Scottish new wave artist Altered Images, and four-piece jazz funk band The James Taylor Quartet.

Also joining the list of performers is Jamaican reggae fusion act Third World, Blancmange and Manchester Indie pop group The Lottery Winners.

The four-day music extravaganza takes place on London Road, with the imposing fortress providing a backdrop to the concerts.

Last year's event, which returned after a Covid-caused break in 2020, boasted The Libertines and other top performers.

Previous performers include Van Morrison, Jools Holland, and Billy Ocean and crowd favourites UB40 have sold out no less than three concerts.
