Medway councillors due to discuss plans for new homes in Rainham and McDonald's in Gillingham

A developer must contribute thousands of pounds towards improving schools, open spaces and the environment if its application for 13 homes is approved.

Officers have recommended the blueprints for a mix of detached and semi-detached properties in Berengrave Lane, Rainham, are approved, despite strong opposition from people living in the street.

The application has already been deferred so councillors could carry out a site visit, which took place last week.

On the list of contributions the developer must make, is £36,000 towards improving Beechings Way playing field, £3,000 for Rainham town centre and £1,600 to repair lights at the Great Lines war memorial.

The plans are due to be discussed at a meeting tonight (Wednesday) along with a number of other proposals for Medway.

One of them is a planning application for a 12-bed hostel, in Kingswood Road, Gillingham.

The application is retrospective because the property is already being used for individuals and families who need temporary emergency housing.

The council has received eight objections based on concerns about parking and the impact on the area.

But officers have recommended approval based on the condition that the hostel must not house more than 15 people and a register of all occupants must be kept.

Plans for a 90-bed care home in Rainham are also set to be approved. If councillors accept the plans, based on officers' recommendations, the owner must contribute £17,000 towards local GP services.

The home will provide 24-hour care for elderly people, some with dementia.

There will be 32 parking spaces but people living nearby have objected because they say this will not be enough.

A new McDonald's for Gillingham will also be on the agenda. The fast food restaurant and takeaway is planned for a plot of land between Dobbies and Tesco in Courteney Road.

If it goes ahead, it will be the largest McDonald's in Medway.
