New images of how The Paddock in Chatham could look

Market stalls and spaces for events feature in revised plans for a town centre green space.

Medway Council has opened a second survey on proposed changes to The Paddock, which lies between Chatham Waterfront bus station and the Pentagon shopping centre.

The funding for the plans will come from a government's Future High Streets Fund grant.

The first consultation into the scheme was held between December and January and results from the survey were shared in May.

According to the Kent Gardens Trust, The Paddock was built on marshland which was reclaimed in the 16th Century.

The proposals include measures to remove and replace five trees and reinstate Military Road, which runs beside The Paddock and The Pentagon.

As well as lawns and planted areas, there would also be a central open space for "events, markets and food stalls" which would also include a water feature.

Previously, concerns were raised over how the water feature could contribute to anti-social behaviour and how it would be maintained, but the refreshed plans include a function to turn off the fountain and drain it completely so it can be used for events.

The documents also say: "A maintenance package for the Paddock scheme has been identified to ensure the longevity of all elements within the scheme."

Further street lighting, measures to discourage skateboarders, and benches made from reclaimed timber from Chatham Waterfront would also be introduced.

The consultation ends on Sunday, July 17. More information and a link to the survey can be found at bit.ly/3yfOoPy

The plans will also be on display in the Pentagon between Monday, July 11 and Saturday, July 16.

On Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16, between 10am and 4pm, the project team behind the proposals will be at the centre answering people's questions and getting their feedback.
