Five of Medway’s parks have been recognised as among the best in the country.

Riverside Country Park, Capstone Farm Country Park, Hillyfields, The Vines and Broomhill Park have been awarded Green Flag status by Keep Britain Tidy.

A green flag is a sign to visitors that the green space has top facilities and is well maintained.

Each year 800 volunteer expert judges visit the sites and judge them against eight criteria: a welcoming place; healthy, safe and secure; well maintained and clean; sustainability; conservation and heritage; community involvement; marketing and management.

Cllr Howard Doe, who is in charge of community services, said: "This award recognises and highlights that people in Medway are benefitting from green spaces of the very highest quality.

"It is also a testament to the hard work of all the staff and volunteers who work so hard to maintain these beautiful sites and make them a perfect location for everyone to enjoy."

Paul Todd, Green Flag award scheme manager, said: "A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.

"Quality green spaces are absolutely essential to happy, healthy communities.

"They are fundamental to our quality of life, whether in cities, towns or villages."
