Parts of hospital closed after bed blaze

Sections of a Kent hospital had to be evacuated after a bed was mysteriously found on fire.

Crews from Medway, Chatham and Gillingham fire stations were called to Medway Maritime Hospital at around 10.50pm last night where a bed in a disused area was alight.

Smoke from the blaze had left the room and had spread to other areas of the hospital. Some wards were evacuated as a precaution.

It took crews an hour to extinguish the flames and clear the smoke.

It is not yet known how the blaze started but an investigation has been launched by Kent Fire and Rescue Service.
