Passengers were evacuated amid long delays after a motor overheated underneath a train.

Twenty firefighters were called to Rochester station at 6.40pm on Tuesday.
Passengers were evacuated after some reported smoke and a flames under the carriage.

Firefighters remained at the scene for half an hour and trains were disrupted for several hours.

Crew manager Ben Fletcher, from Medway Fire Station, said: "One of the motors was smoking where it had overheated so we gave our standard attendance, four fire engines plus a support vehicle."

Commuter Andrew Ray posted a photo of small orange flames under the carriage on the social networking site Twitter.

He said: "It happened about 2ft from me. Small fire but lots of toxic smoke."
Mr Fletcher said: "When we got there, there was nothing like that [flames], but there was an electrical burning smell."
