Plans for 450 homes at Gibraltar Farm in Capstone Valley, Chatham, back on table

Revised plans to build hundreds of homes have been put forward.

A fresh application to develop 450 homes at Gibraltar Farm in Capstone Valley, Chatham, has been submitted to Medway Council and Maidstone council.

The long-running planning battle to develop the site between Ham Lane and North Dane Way has been going on since 2014 when plans were first submitted.

Two public inquiries later, the developers, FD Attwood and Partners, have re-submitted plans to build on the land.

The landowners previously made two multi-million pound offers to Medway Council to sell them a so-called "ransom strip" of land which they wanted to use to access the site, but both bids were turned down by councillors.

Following the second planning inquiry, which was returned in March last year, the planning inspector dismissed the appeal as she believed the developer had not demonstrated that species of bats would not be adversely affected along a proposed access route for pedestrians and cyclists.

Part of the plans include highway works to the following roads: Westfield Sole Road, Shawstead Road, Hempstead Road, Chapel Lane, Hempstead Valley Drive, Hoath Way roundabout, Hoath Way and M2 Junction four.

The site would also include a nursery, shops, and open space.

The developers have submitted a new bat survey and lighting strategy as part of the plans.

Bredhurst Parish Council chairman Vanessa Jones said the changes to the application were "very minor", adding: "It's very difficult for anybody to understand because the changes are so minor, but basically what they are doing is addressing what the inspector failed it on last time."

The parish council will be submitting an objection to the plans in the coming days.

Those on the council fear the village will be adversely affected by the plans while locals have previously stated the plans are "out of touch".

It also stands to be affected by Maidstone council's plans for a 2,000-home "garden village" at Lidsing which is also being promoted by FD Attwood and Partners.

The plans form part of the authority's local plan review which is set to be assessed by a government planning inspector on Monday, May 15.

The public hearing will recommence after the original hearing began in September but was then suspended.

Ms Jones - who is the chairman of the Against Lidsing Garden Development (ALGD) campaign and is standing as an Independent candidate for Boxley ward - said the hearings regarding the Lidsing Garden Village are due to happen on Tuesday, May 23 and Wednesday, May 24.

A fundraising effort by ALGD to raise money for legal representation for the hearings managed to gross £6,000 within two days of it being re-launched ahead of the second hearing commencing.

Maidstone Borough Council elections are taking place on Thursday, May 4.

Standing for election in the Boxley ward are Anne Brindle (Conservatives), Vanessa Jones (Independent), Stella Randall (Labour), Geoffrey Samme (Liberal Democrats)
