Rainham could see library replaced with new community hub

Councillors are considering plans to open a new community hub in a town centre.

Medway Council wants to revamp the library offering in Rainham by closing the current building and opening a modern community hub closer to the shopping area.

The reasons behind the decision are set out in a report to be presented to cabinet members.

It says the current library in Birling Avenue is "outdated" and its location is just outside the town centre.

The council also rents a property housing the Rainham Contact Point in Station Road.

This is usually used to raise inquiries with Kent Police and also for finding out information on council services but it is closed at the moment due to government guidelines.

Council officers are looking to build a centre combining the library and contact point services on the Longley Road side of the shopping precinct.

The initial recommendation will be put before the council's cabinet which will decide whether to proceed with the plans during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, January 12.

If approved, the development would be the subject of a planning application.

No estimation for the cost of the project has been given, however, officers have assessed it could mean finding up to £50,000 just to ready the development for the planning stage.
