Police arrest two people in New Road, Chatham, following suspected burglary in Durham

Two people have been arrested in a town centre following a suspected burglary that happened almost 300 miles away.

Firearms officers and five Kent police cars were spotted by shoppers in Chatham, earlier this afternoon (Saturday).

Passers-by said they were stopped in the Iceland supermarket car park at the back of the store in The Brook.

The force has since confirmed it arrested a man, 31, and a woman, 24, on suspicion of aggravated burglary on behalf of Durham Constabulary at around 11am.

The burglary, in which a substantial amount of cash was allegedly stolen, was reported to have happened in Easington Colliery, Durham, on Friday, July 14 – more than 290 miles away from where the pair were caught.

The woman was also arrested for possession of a bladed weapon after officers seized a knife from inside the vehicle.

Both suspects remain in custody.

The investigation will now be passed back to the original force.

Update: Durham Constabulary confirmed the pair have been released on bail after questioning and inquiries are continuing.
