Best Street, Chatham, closed off after women police officers 'assaulted'

A major town centre road was closed off this morning after two women police officers were reportedly attacked.

A hunt was launched following the incident in Best Street, Chatham.

A spokesman said officers were called at 4.40am to reports of two men seemingly intoxicated in a car.

The driver, who is 30 and from Gillingham, and his 25-year-old passenger were questioned by the officers.

Then the younger man is said to have assaulted the women before running from the scene – he was soon found hiding nearby.

The men are currently in custody on suspicion of drink driving, being in possession of a Class-A drugs and attacking the officers.

The road remained closed both ways during the morning rush-hour between Clover Street and Railway Street.

Congestion built both ways to Maidstone Road and New Road through Chatham.
