Search for couple behind chalked marriage proposal at Medway Pride

Organisers are trying to track down a mystery couple who got engaged thanks to a chalk-written proposal at this year's Medway Pride festival.

Around 1,000 people turned out to celebrate diversity and enjoy a colourful, fun-filled festival at Doust Way, Rochester, on Saturday.

And for two of them it turned out to be an extra special day, thanks to a proposal scrawled on the pavement near the festival's chalk gallery.

The good news was later spotted by festival photographer Sophie Elizabeth Coffey, whose mum Shea Coffey - festival director and co-founder of Medway Pride Radio - was this week attempting to track down the couple.

Shea tweeted: "We at @medway_pride radio want to find the happy couple, we would love to talk to you and @GayELVIS1 has offered to perform at your wedding!"

And she added: "We had a chalk gallery for the kids and big kids to draw on, it was located at the riverfront wall, naturally it spread to the pavement and it was there that someone chalked the proposal.

"For me it summed up what Pride is about: love."

Following last year's virtual event, Saturday's festival was the first time people could come together for the event designed to breakdown barriers within the community.

Entertainment began with opening speeches from dignitaries and supporters, followed by the Medway Pride Radio Roadshow, and music from ABBA Chique, Chai Latte, Gary Lucas, Elberace (Gay Elvis), Amrick Channa, Dr Beverley Ballcrusher, Kelly Wilde, Sami Brooks, and River Medway - who is due to make an appearance on TV show RuPaul's Drag Race.

Community liaison teams from Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Services were also on hand along with staff from Kent and Medway Community Health Care NHS Trust.

Medway Pride organisers also worked alongside Gravesham Pride, to provide a week of events following Gravesham's festival on Saturday August 14.

Medway Pride chair Hilary Cooke said it had been great to see the Pride festival come to fruition.

"The feedback we had was that everyone had a fantastic time," she said. "We did try to put on a Pride festival last year but it ended up being a virtual event, so this was the first face-to-face Pride. It was fantastic to see everybody enjoying themselves and just being able to be themselves.

"We've had a lot of comments from people saying how much it made them feel positive about themselves. Even residents from around the area said they enjoyed the music too, even if they didn't actually go in."

And she explained Pride festivals played a crucial role in helping to make society more cohesive around the country.

She added: "Being able to have a Pride event in your local town is important as it means you can be yourself in your home town without having to travel to London or Brighton. It helps bring down barriers to the wider community.

"We deliberately invited everybody along. If they weren't part of the LGBT community then people were invited to come along as an ally. Everyone is intersectional - we're all part of various groups aside from the LGBT community. It's to bring everyone together and break down those barriers that sometimes you can get if you don't speak to other parts of the community."
