Man claims spiked drink led to racial outburst at PC in Rochester

A man claimed his drink was spiked, giving him no recollection of an incident in which he racially abused a police officer.

George Charnley appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court yesterday, on his 23rd birthday, following a drunken incident in Rochester.

Charnley of Station Road, Longfield, had been with friends on September 7, when he was warned by officers to tone down his behaviour in the High Street.

The air conditioning engineer shouted a derogatory racial slur at PC Sukhrinder Singh Walia.

His solicitor Keith Middleton said Charnley suspected his drink had been spiked as he couldn’t remember what happened after meeting friends at The Kings Head following a family meal.

He only became aware of what happened when he woke up in a police cell the following day.

Charnley pleaded guilty to racially aggravated intentional harassment and was handed a 12-month community order and 40 hours unpaid work.

He must pay £85 costs and a £90 victim surcharge.
