Coronavirus Kent: Hoo St Werburgh Primary School teacher sets up YouTube channel

A primary school teacher has set up an online classroom from her house to help parents teach their little ones.

Lauren Winch, a teacher in Hoo, near Rochester, was inspired to set up her YouTube channel after her friends asked her what they could could do to teach their children from home following the national school closure.

In response, she made short videos aimed at teaching four and five-year-olds key topics including phonics, counting and English skills.

Lauren, who is a Year 1 teacher at Hoo St Werburgh Primary School, said: "I have a few friends who have similar age children to those I teach and they said, 'I am really worried, what can I do?'"

Lauren builds her lessons around topics sent in by parents via her Facebook and Instagram pages.

She added: "It's really from them; if they let me know what they like and what they want, I can do that for them."

Schools across Kent have been coming up with innovative ways to make sure their pupils are engaged while most of them are at home.

The government announced earlier this month that schools would be ordered to close, but would be accepting vulnerable children and the offspring of key workers.
