Teenage girls get stuck in mud at Chandler's Wharf, The Esplanade, Rochester and get advice from rescuers

Two teenage girls who got stuck in the mud on the River Medway trying to retrieve lost bracelet sparked a multi-agency rescue operation yesterday evening.

The girls, who have not been named, had ventured into the water near Chandlers Wharf, Rochester after one of them dropped their jewellery at the water’s edge.

However, after jumping down from the river wall, at The Esplanade, the pair promptly got stuck on the mud and their plight was spotted by someone living in flats who dialed 999.

The emergency services were sent to rescue the pair at about 6.30pm but as they neared the scene the girls had managed to free themselves from the mud and were able to climb back on dry land.

The pair had also managed to get to a nearby friend’s home where they were met by the emergency services and treated for cold and shock.

Neither needed to go to hospital for further treatment.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Nothing is worth going into the water to get.

“A lot of resources were sent to the scene, including police, paramedics and our mud rescue specialists.

“The girls got a bit of a ticking off from us and the police afterwards about the dangers of getting into the river.”
