Kent Search and Rescue has thanked the family and friends of Ben Savage for their efforts to find the missing teenager.

The head of KSAR has issued a plea to others enjoying nights out over the festive period, to make sure no-one else suffers similar tragedy.

Stewart Baird said the response from Ben's friends and the public had been "heartwarming", despite the grim circumstances.

He revealed more than 25 search officers had been involved in the operation, and police had brought in "all available emergency services" including coastguards, the RNLI, firefighters.

Speaking to KentOnline, Mr Baird said: "It appears to be such a tragic end to a simple night out with friends.

"The rivers in Kent are extremely dangerous at the best of times, more so to anyone walking alone late at night after consuming alcohol.

"All emergency services would say the same thing."

"When you're out at night, look after your friends. Don't let anybody walk home alone or if someone is tired or has had a bit too much to drink, put them in a taxi to make sure they get home safely.

"Above all else, always avoid routes near water - it's just not worth the risk."
