Medway City Estate at a traffic standstill

Traffic was at a standstill for 90 minutes on the Medway City Estate this evening.

It is thought to have been caused by signalling problems at temporary traffic lights on Strood High Street.

Drivers were stuck for up to an hour and 40 minutes as the tailbacks stretched to the Medway Tunnel and surrounding area.

Traffic was particularly heavy on the A228 Frindsbury Road in both directions around Bill Street Road.

One driver who left Sir Thomas Longley Road at 5pm had only reached nearby Banks Road - just off Stood High Street - at 6.40pm.

It is a journey that would usually take less than five minutes.

Another, who works on the city estate, took 90 minutes to make it home to Walderslade.

The Medway Tunnel was also extremely busy.

Some of those stuck on city estate turned back around in an effort to return to work and avoid the standstill.

Police had no record of being called to anywhere in the area.

It is thought nearby roadworks were therefore responsible for the chaos.

Traffic eventually cleared shortly after 7pm.
