Asthma death: Teenager Brandon Davies died after suffering attack at party in Gillingham, inquest hears

A teenager died after suffering an asthma attack when he left a party in Gillingham, an inquest has heard.

Brandon Davies, 16, was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest outside a terraced house in Priestfield Road, in the early hours of Saturday, October 24.

The inquest heard that Brandon, who had been visiting from his home in Woolwich, southeast London, had tried to use his asthma pump, but it was empty, before collapsing at the bottom of the stairs. He suffered a cardiac arrest.

Ambulance staff tried to resuscitate him at the scene and took him to Medway Maritime Hospital.

Once there, doctors found it difficult to get a mechanical breathing pump into Brandon’s lungs, due to his asthma.

A brain scan was conducted on Monday, October 26, which found that he had not received enough oxygen to his brain, which caused irreparable damage.

He died later that day.

Pathologist Dr David Rouse recorded irreversible cerebral hypoxia, lack of oxygen to the brain, as the cause of death.

DS Richard Taylor, found six packets of legal highs on a chest of drawers when they searched the house, but said there was no evidence Brandon had taken any.

The house is thought to be a shared accommodation property where tenants rent out rooms.

After interviewing one of Brandon’s friends, DS Taylor, said: “They described to us that the house was hot and stuffy because of the number of people present.

“Brandon had difficulty breathing and decided to go outside to get some fresh air. He tried to use his inhaler but it had run out.

“He started to sway on the stairs and collapsed.”

Brandon’s friend also said he had taken MDMA at 11am on Friday, October 23, but a toxicology report didn’t find any traces of the party drug in his blood.

Senior coroner, Patricia Harding, said at the inquest held the Archbishop’s Palace in Maidstone: “Brandon was with a group of friends and met two others outside McDonald’s at which time Brandon indicated that he wanted to go to the party and ‘get mashed’.

She concluded that he died of natural causes.
