London tube and bus fares frozen for 2020, Transport for London confirms

Tube fares in London are set to be frozen next year, transport bosses have confirmed.

Prices for the London Underground and bus routes around the capital will remain at current levels - meaning commuters and day trippers from Kent will not pay any more for using the city's transport network in 2020.

Pay as you go journeys in Zone 1 with a contactless bank or credit card and Oyster cards will start at £2.40 for off-peak journeys on the underground and £1.50 for off-peak bus rides.

Journeys outside Zone 1 on the Tube, DLR and London Overground start at £1.50 for off-peak travel, Transport for London (TfL) confirmed.

But passengers from Kent using Travelcards will see a 2.8% rise on their tickets from January as the prices are set in partnership with the train operating companies and are controlled by government regulations.

TfL says the cost of hiring a Santander Cycle - £2 per day with no extra charge for under 30 minutes - and Emirates Air Line prices will also remain the same.

Concession fares have been protected with children, over 60s, veterans, apprentices and some receiving benefits will continue to benefit from free or discounted travel.

'We are helping to encourage more people out of their cars and onto public transport,' TfL's Shashi Verma

Director of strategy at TfL Shashi Verma said: "We are committed to making travelling by public transport in London as affordable and convenient as possible.

"Millions of people travel using bus, Tube and rail services across London and through our pay as you go fares system we are helping to encourage more people out of their cars and onto public transport."
