Inquest into death of John Convey found by an Uber driver on grass verge in Lower Twydall Road, Gillingham, suspended while police investigate

An inquest has opened into the death of a man who may have been the victim of a hit-and-run.

The body of John Convey from Richmond Road, Gillingham, was discovered by an Uber driver on the grass verge in Lower Twydall Lane, Gillingham, on July 13.

Mr Convey, who was single and a building contractor originally from Birmingham, had suffered facial injuries and had to be identified by his fingerprints.

He had earlier been reported to police as a missing person.

Uber driver Vijeyen Lutchamiah had dropped off a fare in nearby Little York Meadows, and then noticed the body on his return at about 11.30pm.

However, a post-mortem determined that Mr Convey had died as a result of a combination of morphine, cocaine and amphetamine poisoning, together with an underlying heart condition.

Coroner Katrina Hepburn said that she understood there was an ongoing police investigation into the death, and therefore she suspended the inquest indefinitely until the police matter was concluded.

Kent Police said that two men arrested in connection to the incident, aged 46 and 41, remained on police bail until January 17.
