M2 London-bound between Chatham and Strood closed due to vehicle fire

Part of the M2 has finally reopened after a vehicle fire and oil spillage caused a five-hour closure.

The London-bound carriageway between Junction 3 for Chatham and Junction 2 for Strood was shut since 1pm.

Earlier National Highways confirmed emergency services and traffic officers were on the scene.

A spokesman said: "All lanes have now reopened on the M2 between J3 and J2 near Rochester following an earlier vehicle fire.

"Please allow extra time for remaining delays on approach to clear."

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews were called just after 1pm to reports of a vehicle alight on the M2 London-bound, between Junction 3 and 2, near to Rochester.

"Two fire engines were sent to the scene and crews extinguished the fire using hose reel jets. No injuries were reported, and the is cause is not yet known."

Police confirmed as of 3.50pm the road was still closed.
