Rochester: Woman rescued after falling into River Medway

A woman was taken to hospital after being rescued from the River Medway by firefighters last night.

Crews were called to the Rochester Cruising Club in the Esplanade, after reports someone had fallen in the river at around 1.40am.

It is thought the woman, aged in her 60s, had fallen between a boat and a pontoon.

She was in the river for around 10 minutes before being rescued and was taken to hospital suffering from mild hypothermia.

Crews from Strood and the water safety team based in Larkfield attended.

It came the same day as volunteers from Kent Search and Rescue launched their Christmas water safety campaign.

They have been warning revellers about the dangers of falling into the river, and will be putting on special patrols in a bid to prevent deaths over the festive period.
