While trying to carry out the searches, at about 7pm on Monday, officers from British Transport Police were said to have been "surrounded by other youths" as they "kept trying to interfere with the search and goad officers".

One person was arrested on suspicion of possessing a Class B drug - although police have not confirmed what the substance allegedly found was.

A second boy was arrested for threatening behaviour after telling an officer who was searching him that he would and then allegedly attempted to head butt them.

A lump hammer was found discarded on the floor near where the group were standing.

A BTP spokesman said: "Two teenage boys were arrested by officers at Gillingham railway station at around 7pm yesterday.

"One was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and the other on suspicion of possession of a Class B substance.

"Both boys were then returned to their home addresses."
