Gillingham striker Joe Gbode nets twice for Hastings United after returning on loan to Isthmian Premier club

Young Gillingham striker Joe Gbode returned to Hastings United on loan and struck twice on Saturday.

The Gills, who have struggled for goals themselves in League 2, see the 17-year-old as one for the future and it’s Gbode’s second loan spell at the Isthmian Premier Division side this season.

Gbode has made a trio of league appearances for the Gills this term, while also coming off the bench in the EFL Trophy match against Brighton.

He initially went out to Hastings in August and scored twice on his debut in a 4-1 win before adding another against Kingstonian before a recall to Priestfield.

The striker - wearing the no.17 for this loan side - made a big impact again on Saturday, in a 4-1 win over Haringey Borough.

He netted his first from the penalty spot and a second 10 minutes later, beating a couple of players before finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

He’s in a team that includes former Gills youth boss Craig Stone.

Gillingham’s senior strikers are failing to do the business for the club at present, with just six goals in 17 league matches so far this season.

Midfielder Josh Chambers also got another 90 minutes for Worthing, playing in their 1-0 win over Oxford City. The Gills teenager is also out on loan.
