Gillingham striker Cody McDonald tipped to push on after spectacular goal against Shrewsbury

Cody McDonald’s thunderous effort at the weekend could help the striker finish the season with a flourish, says Gills boss Justin Edinburgh.

The 29-year-old frontman, who has been plagued by injury all season, scored his fourth goal of the campaign to level the scores against Shrewsbury at 1-1 on Saturday.

McDonald fired home from 20 yards after Bradley Dack set him up from a free-kick in first-half stoppage-time.

Edinburgh said: “It was what we deserved, coming to the end of the first half, and I thought we picked up the momentum.

“I am pleased for Cody. It has been a tough season for him but I am sure the goal will give him that little injection in belief that he can go on and finish the season strongly and be ready for next season.”

McDonald’s last goal came on November 28, in a 2-2 draw against the same opposition.

The Gills striker limped off late on at the weekend, however.

“He had a sore ankle and we will assess that,” said Edinburgh.

McDonald has been out injured since the 3-0 win at Millwall in December and returned to action in the goalless draw at Sheffield United earlier this month.
