Veteran Gillingham defender Barry Fuller says substance more important than style in race for League 1 play-off place

Experienced campaigner Barry Fuller knows draws aren’t enough.

The Gills are the draw specialists in the league, picking up their 10th on the road at Burton on Saturday.

Gillingham have only lost seven games in League 1 this season, a better figure than the league leaders and are 11 matches unbeaten, but those draws won’t be enough.

Fuller said: “We are doing something right to have not lost too many but if we want to push towards the play-offs we need to be turning those points into wins.

“At the end of the year if we look back and we have just missed out you would look at our away form and say there weren’t enough wins, with 10 draws.

“At this stage of the season winning, regardless of how you play, is important. It’s the back end of the season and you want to pick up three points even if you don’t play great.”

Gillingham weren’t ruthless enough against Burton on Saturday.

Fuller said: “For large parts we dominated and we created a lot of chances, we had a lot of set pieces, but it wasn’t our day. We weren’t ruthless enough in the final third.

“We are disappointed not to have taken all three points when we have dominated a game like we did.

“It can be frustrating when you are creating that many chances and opportunities, especially away from home.

“It would have only taken one but it wasn’t our day, we will dust ourselves down, it’s another point and we can make it a good point by winning on Tuesday (at Blackpool).

“The gaffer had his say afterwards, he was frustrated. When you create that many chances and you don’t take one, it can be frustrating.

“The gaffer is frustrated, his team has dominated large parts of the game and only come away with a point, which is a bit of a downer and feels like you have dropped two.”

Fuller had a new team-mate to play alongside down the right flank, with Jordan Graham introduced midway through the second half.

Asked about Graham’s performance, Fuller said: “He is lively and takes people on. When he came on he put a few crosses in and showed the quality he has got.

“He is champing at the bit to get his starting place, but he was lively and caused problems.

“I know that if I give him the ball he will cause the full-back problems. I have played against him in the past and I know he is a tough player to play
against.”
