Gillingham defender Bradley Garmston says Justin Edinburgh was right to have team meeting after shock FA Cup exit to Stevenage

Bradley Garmston is in no doubt last Sunday’s team meeting helped Gillingham.

The players were called in by boss Justin Edinburgh after losing to Stevenage in the
FA Cup.

It was an unusual step to cancel their day off, but Garmston wasn’t surprised given Gills’ performance.

He said: “We expected it. At the end of the day we take it on the chin and we address it.

“There were a few of us happy to be back in, to get our recovery done as early as possible so we could prepare for the Yeovil game.

“There were no complaints about it.

“We did some analysis on the game against Stevenage, things we needed to address and work on ahead of Yeovil and Bury on Saturday.

“Also there were some good things we could take out of the game, especially in the second half, that we needed to carry on.

“It’s definitely helped, in terms of the recovery and also the analysis is very important.

“When you’re on the pitch sometimes you miss certain things and don’t get to see the full picture of what’s going on.”

Garmston scored a lovely goal after cutting in on his right foot as Gills cancelled out Yeovil’s early opener.

Edinburgh’s men had late chances to win before going out 5-4 on penalties.

Left-back Garmston said: “Our workrate and our energy across the pitch was definitely a lot better.

“That was one of the things we had to address because it wasn’t good enough on Saturday.

“I think we could have had more possession and better phases of play – that was one of the key things at half-time – and we certainly had a bit more in the second half and created a lot more chances, and there was a lot more energy and calmness in possession.

“It was great to bring our side back into the game with the equaliser.”
