Gillingham team news ahead of League 2 match against Salford City - battle for goalkeeper spot between Glenn Morris and Jake Turner while George Lapslie returns to training

The battle for the goalkeeper spot at Gillingham is on after Jake Turner returned to training this week.

Turner missed the league match against Wrexham last weekend and was replaced in goal by 40-year-old stopper Glenn Morris, helping the Gills to a 1-0 win at Priestfield.

It was Morris’ first league appearance this season after Turner took over as the club’s no.1 ahead of the current campaign. Now back fit, after heavy bruising, Turner will be keen to reclaim his place.

Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence said: “We have got two good goalkeepers, Glenn has had a marvellous career and Jake has done very well this season.

“It’s a difficult decision but a good problem to have.”

George Lapslie has missed the last two games with a hamstring strain but is expected to be available again this weekend.

Clemence said: “He is definitely someone you want around the squad.”

That could mean captain Shaun Williams dropping out of the 18 having featured on the bench as an unused substitute in the last two games.

Clemence also has young striker Joe Gbode working closely with the first team as a back-up option in attack.

Josh Andrews, meanwhile, was due to see a specialist on Thursday, after Clemence had spoken to the press.

The Gills boss was hopeful of some good news and said: “He is feeling quite good about things, the phsyios are feeling positive as well.”

Clemence could have him available soon if the prognosis is good.

Dom Jefferies, meanwhile, isn’t expected back for another month with Clemence saying the midfielder is “on track” with his rehabilitation from injury.
